Abingdon School

One of the oldest schools in the country with a history dating back to the 13th century, Abingdon is unashamedly academic, with some 1,000 bright-spark pupils hard at work – and play – within its beautiful grounds. They’re all boys at the moment, but from September 2026 the school will start welcoming girls for the very first time, heralding an exciting new chapter in its rich history. The school sits in the middle of the lovely market town of Abingdon in 35 acres of grounds with grande dame buildings and newer additions – including the enormous, three-floor science ...

    Bursaries
Abingdon School believes the breadth and depth of their academic curriculum, the quality of their teaching and learning and the extent of their co-curricular programme is a compelling educational offering, and believe wholeheartedly that this offering should be made available to as many young people as possible which is why they offer a number of free and subsidised places to local day pupils who would otherwise not be able to afford full school fees. The school currently has 74 day students who are benefiting from free and subsidised places. Their Giving Day, held each November, helps to raise money to assist with the funding of their bursary programme.

Pupils do not need to win a scholarship in order to be considered for a bursary, although applicants do need to have passed the entrance assessments. Abingdon offers scholarships (which are awarded on merit and do not come with any fee remission) and bursaries (which are awarded based on financial need). Priority for bursaries is given to those who perform best overall in the assessment process, to those who it is felt are likely to gain most from an Abingdon education and to UK families who live locally.

As a guide, families with one or more of the following criteria would not normally be considered eligible for a free or subsidised place: a small or no mortgage, ownership of two or more properties, household income of more than £100,000 and / or material equity in property or other assets, one or more new or expensive cars, frequent or expensive holidays, significant recent home improvements, and those not maximising household earnings.

  • Taking a deep dive into humanities

In September, 45 Year 4 pupils from three primary schools came to Abingdon for an engaging topic morning to encourage new ways of thinking, questioning, and collaborating. They met a Roman solider; solved a murder, and discovered the Earth's history.
