The power of co-education at Windlesham House

Children are compassionate, resilient and socially, ready to contribute positively to an increasingly connected world. That, for us, is the true power of co-education.

Co-education is woven into the very fabric of who we are. As one of the oldest prep schools in the country, we are proud of our rich heritage but equally committed to preparing children for the world they will inherit. We believe that learning and growing together creates a richer, more authentic educational experience and helps children develop the confidence, empathy and understanding needed to thrive in modern society.

Walk around Windlesham House on any day and you will see co-education in action. Boys and girls collaborate in classrooms, perform together on stage, compete side by side in sport, lead school initiatives and support one another in boarding life. Whether pupils are devising a drama production, debating a contemporary issue, raising money for charity or representing the school in an IAPS competition, they learn the value of different perspectives, shared leadership and mutual respect.

Our ethos has always been centred on educating the whole child. Through our ACE philosophy, active, creative and exploring, we encourage every pupil to discover their own strengths while celebrating the achievements of others. Children are free to pursue their passions without limitation, whether that is music, science, sport, outdoor learning, performing arts or community service.

Perhaps the greatest strength of co-education is the culture it creates. Ours is a warm, family-oriented community where friendships are genuine, individuality is celebrated and every child feels known and valued. Children learn to communicate confidently, collaborate effectively and develop emotional intelligence naturally through daily interactions.

By the time they leave, pupils are not only academically prepared for senior school; they are compassionate, resilient and socially, ready to contribute positively to an increasingly connected world. That, for us, is the true power of co-education.

Windlesham House’s ISI inspection in 2024 highlighted the co-curricular programme as a significant strength.
