A Brick-tastic Day of STEAM Learning at LEGOLAND
Pupils from Years 5 to 8 at Horris Hill School recently enjoyed an exciting school trip to LEGOLAND
Windsor, where hands-on learning, creativity, and collaboration were at the heart of the experience.
The day began with a series of tailored workshops, offering each year group the chance to engage with real-world STEM concepts in an interactive setting. Years 5 and 6 explored engineering and coding using LEGO SPIKE Prime kits, designing and building their own theme park rides. Working in teams, the pupils programmed their creations to move and function, developing key skills in problem-solving, coding, and design.
Meanwhile, Years 7 and 8 stepped into the shoes of theme park security engineers. Their challenge was to design and programme robots capable of keeping the park, and its visitors, safe. The pupils tackled the task with enthusiasm, applying advanced coding techniques to overcome complex scenarios and showcasing their ability to think creatively under pressure.
The afternoon saw the pupils visit ‘The Brick’, LEGOLAND Windsor’s dedicated creative space. Here, they were invited to build something that they felt represented themselves. A cello, national flags, and even a miniature golf course were just a few of the imaginative results!
The day concluded with a behind-the-scenes exploration of the science behind roller coasters, where pupils investigated how forces such as momentum and magnetism come together to power some of the park’s most thrilling rides. This session brought classroom STEAM learning vividly to life, and the entire visit proved to be not only a brilliant educational opportunity, but a memorable day of fun. A huge thankyou goes to the staff and pupils who made the trip such a resounding success!
