What It’s Like to Board at a Top UK Prep Boarding School?

Faye and Zeenah, two of our current Prep School boarders, talk about their experiences and what makes Finborough such a special place to live and learn.


How long have you been boarding at Finborough?
Faye: I’ve been here for two years now.
Zeenah: I’ve been boarding at Finborough for about two and a half years.

Where are you from?
Faye: I live in the UK and board during the week, my older sister is here too.
Zeenah: I’m an international boarder, but I have family in the UK. My cousins also came to Finborough and loved it.

What do you enjoy most about boarding?
Faye: Doing activities with my boarding family! Recently we went paddle boarding which was really fun.
Zeenah: Girls’ football club, rounders, and when we build obstacle courses are my favourites.

What advice would you give to someone new to boarding?
Faye: You’ll meet loads of new friends!
Zeenah: Be kind to everyone and everyone will get along with you.

What will you miss most over the summer holidays?
Faye: I’ll be busy fishing and having fun outside, but I’ll miss my friends from boarding.
Zeenah: Definitely seeing my friends every day.

What are you most looking forward to in September?
Faye: Starting Year 4, we’re going to learn about the Vikings which sounds really interesting.
Zeenah: Getting back into the routine and seeing everyone again.

What’s your favourite subject at school?
Faye: Topic. I love learning about different things and asking questions.
Zeenah: I enjoy a mix of subjects, especially ones where I can be active and creative.

How has boarding helped you grow?
Faye: I’ve made lots of friends and feel really settled.
Zeenah: I’ve become much more confident. I wasn’t very talkative when I first started, but now I feel much more comfortable and outgoing.

What’s the support like from teachers and staff?
Faye: They’re always kind and very helpful.
Zeenah: Teachers are always willing to help, and kindness is recognised and rewarded.

Would you recommend boarding at Finborough?
Faye: Yes!
Zeenah: Definitely. It’s been a great experience so far.

A Day in the Life Boarding at Finborough

Boarding at Finborough gives Prep pupils the chance to enjoy school life in a warm, structured, and supportive setting. While they follow the same school day as day pupils, boarders benefit from extra friendships, and fun enrichment activities.

The day begins at 7:00am with wake-up, followed by breakfast and time outside before lessons start at 8:25am. After the school day ends at 4:20pm, boarders attend supervised study and tea time.

Evenings bring time to relax with varied activities like sport, crafts, or screen-free social time. Prep boarders wind down with a 7:00pm curfew and lights out at 8:30pm.Boarding helps build independence, confidence, and a strong sense of community — all while having plenty of fun.
