Finborough Pupils Take on the Norfolk Broads for DofE

Recently, 45 Senior School pupils embarked on an adventurous Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) expedition across the waterways of the Norfolk Broads. An experience that combined determination, teamwork, and resilience.

In total, 21 canoes took to the water – a logistical triumph that saw the pupils coordinating equipment from two Scout organisations, as well as making use of four of their own. The students set up camp at Barton Turf on Thursday evening, ready for an early start the next morning.

Friday began with a scenic paddle from Hautbois to Salthouse Broad with the sun shining! Covering an impressive 15km, the expedition got off to an encouraging start.

Spirits remained high, with pupils rising early once again on Saturday to take advantage of near-perfect paddling conditions: dry, calm, and overcast – ideal for a longer stretch on the water.

Saturday’s journey covered over 21km to Ferrygate, and with clear skies overhead, the group was treated to spectacular stargazing that night.

Unfortunately, a decision was made to cancel the final day of the expedition, due to worsening weather conditions overnight.

Nevertheless, the three-night expedition with more than 35km paddled, pupils successfully met the requirements for both their Qualifying and Practice Expeditions. A Practice Expedition is a required training experience for all DofE levels, to help prepare pupils for their final assessed excursion. The Qualifying Expedition is the final assessment of a section where pupils demonstrate their learned skills.

The trip was not only a physical challenge, but a rewarding experience that built confidence and leadership – true to the spirit of the DofE Award.

At Finborough School, Mrs Foss and her team run all 3 Levels of the DofE programme, with canoeing at Silver and Gold Levels. Last weekend, Senior School pupils were either completing a Silver Qualifying or a Gold Practice Expedition.

Mrs Foss commented on the weekend 'students had an awesome time, they all did so well, and the weather was kind, apart from the last day!'

The Finborough School community congratulates all pupils and staff involved in making this memorable adventure such a success.
