Partnerships Week: Bridging the Gap Through the Generations
This Partnerships Week, we're celebrating our wonderful collaboration with the local elderly community group, 'Young at Heart'!
In today’s increasingly age-segregated society, fostering connections across generations is paramount. Starting intergenerational activities, which bring together young and old, are not just heartwarming; they are a necessity for a well rounded society.
At Bede’s, we have been able to build a unique opportunity to spearhead this endeavour. Over the last few years we have developed a strong relationship with an elderly care group called ‘Young at Heart’. Members have been able to come to Bede’s and take part in a variety of different activities, such as Art, Cooking and Sport. Our pupils have joined in on the sessions and have really enjoyed the opportunity to help and support older members of the community. Young at Heart members have thoroughly enjoyed getting out and about and chatting with pupils whilst taking part in activities.
Research has proven how important engaging with younger generations can lead to significant emotional upliftment. It’s a chance to share their wisdom, stories and life experience whilst at the same time pursuing a mutual activity. Meanwhile our pupils gain valuable insights into the past, developing their skills of empathy and other life skills not taught in traditional classrooms. This mutual exchange has strengthened community ties and has helped to break down barriers of ageism. This week BTEC Sport pupils played a variety of age specific games with the group. Great fun was had by all!
