Devonshire House Preparatory School Expands Support with Full-Time English as an Additional Language Programme

Devonshire House School has launched a dedicated English as an Additional Language(EAL) programme, designed to ensure that pupils arriving with little or no English can thriveboth academically and socially.

The initiative is led by a full-time experienced EAL teacher who provides daily lessons during the school day. Lessons are tailored to each child’s needs, delivered either one-to-one or in small groups, and supported by Flash Academy – an engaging, child-friendly app offering resources in 48 different home languages.

'Our mission is to make every child feel confident, happy, and successful across the school day,' said Mrs Bird, Head of Learning Support at Devonshire House. “This programme ensures that pupils not only make accelerated progress in reading, writing, grammar, and spelling, but also develop the conversational and social skills needed to fully integrate into our community.”

The course is available to both absolute beginners and improvers. Importantly, lessons are scheduled during the school day, allowing children to enjoy Devonshire House’s wide range of free after-school clubs alongside their peers.

As part of the admissions process, for pupils joining Year 1 and above, an in-person or online assessment is conducted to determine proficiency. In some cases, offers may be conditional on enrolment in the EAL programme.

With this initiative, Devonshire House reaffirms its commitment to inclusivity and academic excellence, ensuring that every child has the tools to succeed.
