King’s Worcester Claims Victory in the Football Challenge Cup at Sixways

King's Worcester has again proven their talent on the football pitch by winning the prestigious Challenge Cup, in a convincing 2-0 victory over RGS Worcester at Sixways Stadium.

The annual football derby, one of the highlights in the schools’ sporting calendars, saw King’s Worcester deliver an outstanding performance in front of a large crowd of pupils, families and staff. Both teams demonstrated impressive skill, but the King’s defence proved too strong for the RGS team who could not break their back line.

Following an evenly matched start, King’s took the lead midway through the first half. A skilful exchange of passes saw the King’s Captain, Barnaby Blundell, unleash a thunderbolt shot from 25 yards that sailed over the RGS goalkeeper.

The second half saw RGS start with renewed vigour, but this again was curtailed by the impressive defensive work from King’s. Midway through the half, a defensive mix up by RGS saw Leo Cunningham brought down in the box which led to a penalty being awarded to King’s. Leo’s twin brother, Toby Cunningham, assuredly stepped up to coolly convert the penalty and give Kings a two-goal advantage.

RGS continued to put pressure on the King’s goal, but the defence and goalkeeper were resolute in their work. The boys confidently rode out the late pressure to take the well-deserved victory.

Following the game, the King’s first XI coach, Andy Holliday, commented on the victory: 'This was a great result for the team following a lot of hard work by them to improve their performance. It is also a testament to the strength in depth of the school’s football program, with several Year 11 pupils in the team contributing greatly to the victory, showing the opportunities available to of our students to play their part in regaining the Challenge Cup and pointing to a very bright future for King’s football.'

Head of Foundation, Mr Ben Charles, attending his first Challenge Cup fixture, added: 'The team rose to the challenge and thoroughly deserve this outstanding result. Their talent, determination and excellent sportsmanship were a credit to them and to King’s. Thank you to everyone who came along to support the teams on the night, and to RGS for being very worthy opponents.'
