View from the Top: Sally Cox on the power of performing arts in prep schools

For our latest instalment of View from the Top, we’ve handed over to Sally Cox, head of Springmead School. Here, Mrs Cox gets on her soapbox to explain why she believes the performing arts are so important in prep schools, helping push pupils out of their comfort zone and giving them the opportunity to fail without fear of ridicule...

'In the vibrant world of prep schools, performing arts holds a unique and transformative place. For our youngest pupils, watching older children take to the stage is nothing short of aspirational. It sparks curiosity, ambition, and the belief that one day, they too will stand confidently under the spotlight.

Academically achieving their potential and beyond is always going to be a strong focus for any prep school but how we get our children there can vary. The skills, attitudes and self belief that performance instills translates seamlessly into every aspect of a child's education giving them the grit and determination to challenge themselves in every task and problem they come across.

Performing arts are about far more than applause and costumes. At Springmead we have recognised the cultivation of a culture of camaraderie, where respect flows freely between peers who understand the courage it takes to step onto a stage with a half-formed act. This bravery deserves recognition, not just from classmates but from teachers who appreciate the vulnerability and effort behind every performance.  Here I am fortunate to have a team around me who as well as being talented themselves are advocates of the impact that performance can have on the whole child.

In our schools, we strive to create an environment that is inclusive and mutually respectful.  It is not only the glittering performance on a big stage, its the lunch time flash mob in the playground and the annual talent show.  Our talent show here at Springmead showcased home grown acts from magic tricks, animal impersonations, dance recitals and song and dance.  Here, children are allowed to fail without fear of ridicule. Fun, not perfection, is the goal. This freedom to experiment and learn through mistakes builds inner confidence, confidence that will serve them well beyond the school gates. After all, there are few careers where eye contact, a firm handshake, and the ability to present oneself are not essential.

Performing arts teach children the strength to “have a go,” to push beyond their comfort zones, and to embrace challenges with resilience. Each performance is a testament to the care and pride they have in themselves and their school community. It is a celebration of creativity, courage, and character, qualities that prepare them for life in a world that values collaboration and communication.

Children look back with warmth and emotion at the experiences they have enjoyed both as audience and performer in a safe and inclusive environment.  So, let us continue to champion the performing arts in our prep schools. For in every song sung, every line spoken, and every dance performed, we are shaping confident, empathetic individuals ready to take on the future.'
