Back Seat of the School Bus with...Kate Reardon

Come and join us on the Back Seat of the School Bus: a new feature where we’ll be sitting down with some of our favourite people to get them to spill the beans on their parenting style – and let us in on their own time at school too. First up, it’s journalist and Editor-in-Chief of Times LUXX, Kate Reardon.

What is your proudest parenting moment?
Actually becoming a parent – it took many, many rounds of IVF.

And your biggest parenting fail?
Not having children 20 years ago!

What do you wear on the school run – and have you ever had any fashion disasters?
Either shame-free sweats – frankly, getting them to school in the right clothes, with the right sports kit, equipment, snacks, signed forms and homework is a small but delicious daily moment of triumph – or I’m barely recognisable and absurdly overdressed on my way to a meeting.

What do your children think of you – and do you care?
Luckily, they’re only five years old, so I’m still in the golden, best-person-on-earth stage. I’m milking it.

Who (dead or alive) would you most like to sit next to on the school bus?
Professor Tanya Byron, eminent child psychologist.

Tell us one thing you learned at school that has stayed with you?
How to stop drinking before I throw up.

What’s the one thing you wish you’d paid more attention to at school?
Probably maths.

What was your childhood ambition?
To be a champion three-day event rider or, failing that, Amanda de Cadenet. This was the ’80s.

What’s the thing your parents used to say that made your eyes roll – which you now find yourself saying to your own children?
Everything.

And finally… what did you get up to behind the bike sheds?!
I attended Stowe for the sixth form. There were a lot of boys. It was an immensely happy time.
