For this week's View from the Top, we've handed over to Neal Bailey, head of Pinewood School. Below, Mr Bailey explores the value of upper school (Years 7 and 8) in a prep school...
There is something quietly powerful about the final two years of prep school - a time when children, standing on the threshold of adolescence, are given space to grow, lead and flourish. In a nurturing environment, Years 7 and 8 are far more than a bridge to senior school. They are a rite of passage, full of leadership, creativity, self-discovery and celebration.
At this stage of the journey, pupils step into meaningful roles of responsibility. They become ambassadors - proudly representing the school, welcoming visitors, mentoring younger children, captaining teams and speaking publicly. These are not symbolic positions; they build confidence, humility and life skills that cannot be rushed or replicated.
The curriculum becomes more diverse and dynamic. With greater autonomy, schools can focus on innovation, service and communication. Pupils explore deeper ideas, take on collaborative projects, and develop the confidence to present their thinking with clarity and flair. They write, perform, design and create - all in a setting refreshingly free from personal devices. Without the distractions of screens, friendships deepen, curiosity thrives, and learning becomes more human. Boarding during these years can add another rich layer - offering independence and shared camaraderie. It is often a first step towards navigating the wider world, supported by encouragement and care.
Academically, children remain motivated - preparing for assessments, sitting exams, and taking real pride in their results. These are not simply academic milestones, but affirmations of effort, growth and readiness for the next stage. The final weeks are usually filled with memory-making: a well-earned leavers’ trip, time with friends, and opportunities to express themselves through art, drama and music. All of this culminates in a celebration that is entirely theirs - a prize giving that recognises not just what they have achieved, but who they have become.
The maturity, confidence and momentum built during Years 7 and 8 play an important role in how successfully pupils step into senior school. Having taken on leadership roles, managed real responsibilities, and engaged deeply with their learning, they move on with a quiet assurance. They carry with them not only strong results, but a sense of purpose and resilience that has grown steadily over time. These final years form a springboard, giving children the grounding they need to thrive in the next stage of their journey.
For any parent, the choice becomes clear: Years 7 and 8 are not just worth staying for - they are a gift that lasts a lifetime.
